Despite her consistent Path-following effort, Shanshan’s future career plan kept changing along the course of her four years. She wanted to apply for master’s degrees abroad as a sophomore. Then, in junior year, she considered taking prestigious jobs on the east coast such as those in consulting firms. In the first half of her senior year, Shanshan was actually preparing to apply for master’s programs in social work or sociology in other elite universities in Beijing. She shared her thoughts about this decision:My plan is always changing because I can’t see myself in five years or even in a year. I am at a loss about my future. I realize that it may not be worthwhile to do a master’s in China [for 3 years], compared with the common 2-year programs abroad. However, it makes no difference given my indecisive situation. I need this time to think over my future and it will be good for me to be in a different university for a change.
